Figure: above: the trimodal velocity distribution from the experiment. The large peak in the middle represents the Bose-Einstein condensate, and on either side, carrying opposite velocities, are the phonons created by parametric excitation. Below are the individual phonons (blurred spheres) and a diagram representing their entanglement.

Simulation of the early universe in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Schematic representation of the principle behind the experiment. A laser excites a crystal defect in a sheet of hBN, composed of boron atoms (in red) and nitrogen atoms (in blue). The emitted photons are separated from the reflected laser using a polariser. These photons, emitted under resonant excitation, have properties that are particularly favourable for quantum information.

When quasicrystals meet the quantum Hall effect

Definition of a flip. The walker (represented by a green crocodile) is arriving at a site that has not yet been visited (shown in red), where it immediately consumes (for the n-th time) the food, shown in red on the right and blue on the left (sites where food has already been consumed appear in black). If the next food consumed is blue (to the left of the area already visited), a flip will have occurred; if it is red, it will not.

Figure : (a) LA attenuation (of the energy) as a function of frequency at 15K (▲) and 300K (■). All other symbols are data from the literature, namely BLS results using visible (□) [53] and ultra-violet (△▽) [54, 55], (∗) [56] incident wavelengths (UV data from Ref. 57 are excluded as unexplained [56]). The symbols (•) [58] and (□) [34] are previous data from picosecond acoustics. The lines are explained in the text.
