Spins under pressure: towards a quantum liquid state

An optical obstacle in a superfluid light flow. At the top, all is calm: as long as the velocity remains low, the fluid ‘glides’ without any friction, making the obstacle ‘invisible’ to the flow. But as soon as the critical velocity is exceeded, as shown below, superfluidity breaks down due to the emission of a pair of quantised vortices in the wake of the obstacle. Surprisingly, the obstacle then moves upstream, propelled by the vortices it leaves behind.
